About Us

The Rotary Club of Greater Albany

The Greater Albany Rotary Club meets at noon every Monday at the Linn County Fair Expo. Currently made up of 65 members, our Rotarians are active in varying ways in many service projects, both locally and internationally. Some members donate money, some donate their time, others – their job skills and technical expertise. Each project is studied prior to our involvement to determine if it meets our goals of sustainability, betterment of community, and greatest impact for the greatest good. Some examples of our current and recently completed service projects are shown below. And while we work on these service programs, we remain united in the global campaign to eradicate polio.

For the Children ~ Greater Albany Rotarians financially support the Albany Parks & Rec’s Children’s Performing Arts Program by sponsoring free quality presentations to children and their families; and the Newspapers in Education Program which supplies newspapers to various elementary classrooms in the Albany area as a teaching tool. We originated the now district-wide Dictionary Project where each third-grade student in Linn County receives a free dictionary during the school year.

High School Students ~ While schools is in session, we have a Student-of the Month presentation where one student from one of the three local high schools is recognized for demonstrating a significant turn-around or overcoming a major obstacle in their life. Students are invited to share their story, awarded a certificate and a $250 gift card to the LBCC book store. At the end of the school year, we award scholarships in the amount of $1000 to one student from each of the Greater Albany High Schools based on the same criteria as the Student of the Month.

Water Projects – In Tanzania, through grants and volunteer labor, we helped build a cement “pool” to contain, and keep clean, spring water before it’s piped downhill to serve over 150,000 residents. In Sierra Leone, also through grants and volunteer labor, Greater Albany Rotarians helped build four towers to install and hold water distribution tanks.

Shipping Containers – Greater Albany Rotarians assist in obtaining, storing and paying for the shipping of an annual container full of hospital equipment, computer equipment and books to a hospital, nursing school and orphanages in Uganda. We also help to obtain and then pay for shipping of a container of hospital equipment, valued approximately at $250,000, to a local Philippine Rotary club for use in their local hospitals.

About Our Partners

The Historic Carousel & Museum

Our vision is to enchant young and old alike with the finest carousel in the world, promote the artistry of carousel building by sharing our skills and talents, and build community by opening our venue to events and activities. The Historic Carousel & Museum is a group of community volunteers working to bring the magic of carousels to Historic Downtown Albany. We are creating a menagerie of unique carousel animals that are hand-carved and hand-painted using traditional styles and techniques, in an effort to preserve and restore the 1909 Dentzel carousel mechanism acquired through a donation arranged by the Dentzel family through the National Carousel Association. When we are finished, we will have built a world-class complex that will house the finished carousel along with space for community events, studios for carving and painting, a gift shop and a museum to preserve carousel history.

The Albany Downtown Association

The Albany Downtown Association (ADA) is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the revitalization of Albany’s Downtown. The ADA efforts promote Downtown Albany as the heart of the community, strengthen the economic vitality by encouraging business diversity and enhance the unique physical characteristics of a National Register historic district. A cooperative advertising program, seasonal events, promotions and a parking district are all operated by the Albany Downtown Association to reinforce revitalization efforts. The ADA is a strong advocate for businesses in the downtown core and is here to assist current and potential business and property owners.
